Time of blooming Rhododendrons

Rhododendron is a genus of more than thousand species of woody plants in the heath family, either evergreen or deciduous, and found mainly in Asia. It is the national flower of Nepal. The name come from Ancient Greek words ῥόδον rhódon "rose" and δένδρον déndron "tree". Rhododendrons are spectacular garden shrubs grown for their clusters of Spring blooming, bell-shaped flowers and attractive evergreen foliage. Rhododendrons are broadly classified into 6 main categories. These are Elipidote Rhododendrons, Lepidote Rhododendrons, Species Rhododendrons, Vireya Rhododendrons, Evergreen Azaleas and Deciduous Azaleas. Azaleas make up two subgenera of Rhododendron. They are distinguished from "true" rhododendrons by having only five anthers per flower.
Colorful Rhododendrons are blooming right now at the Botanical Garden of Polish Academy of Science in Powsin near Warsaw. This amazing spectacle of colors will last just for a few weeks.

  15. A beautiful variety of colours. My parents planted a small Rhododendron in the front lawn the first house they bought when they got married in the 1950's & it was still there when they sold the house after their retirement in their 60's. It grew into a huge beautiful tree that was always covered in masses of pink flowers.
