Eilean Donan - most picturesque castle in Scotland

Image
Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Donnain) is a small island, which lies about 1 kilometre from the village of Dornie in the western Highlands of Scotland. The name Eilean Donan, or the island of Donan, is most probably called after the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD. The island is dominated by the picturesque castle. Some people say Eilean Donan is the most beautiful castle in Scotland. It was founded in the thirteenth century and became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and the Clan Macrae. In 1719 the castle was destructed by British ships, during the Jacobite rebellions. The details of the present castle differ from its original appearance. The restoration included the construction of an arched bridge to give easier access to the island. A picturesque castle fr...

Scotland's rocky coastline

Image
Scotland's coasts and seas are beautiful and very varied. There are the rocky shores in the west coastline (see also: Most beautiful coastline in the world ). There are several cliff-top blow-holes. The coast has a complex geology, and the sea has exploited the softer rocks and lines of weakness to produce a spectacularly varied landscape. Structural features of sea cliffs include not only the expected caves and overhangs, but also spectacular natural arches and bridges, and even flying buttresses. There are several cliff-top blow-holes. In the east, the predominantly low-lying coastline is dominated by sandy beaches. ABC Wednesday

A wider definition of the Highlands is that used by the Scotch Whisky industry. The Highlands contains the most mountainous terrain in Great Britain, including the highest peak, Ben Nevis. The region is largely composed of ancient rocks from the Cambrian and Precambrian periods which were uplifted during the later Caledonian Orogeny. The entire region was covered by ice sheets during the Pleistocene ice ages. The complex geomorphology includes incised valleys and lochs carved by the action of mountain streams and ice, and a topography of mountain ranges, irregularly distributed mountains whose summits have similar heights above sea-level. The weather changes ver...
