Mikulov - fairy-tale town in South Moravia, Czechia

South Moravia is a wine-growing region in Czechia. It is a true paradise for each and every tourist. In the very centre of the South Moravia is located the beautiful town of Mikulov. Mikulov is situated between the Pavlovské vrchy hilly area and the edge of the Mikulov Highlands, on the border with Lower Austria. Mikulov is a town you definitely shouldn’t miss on a journey through Czechia.

Dominating the town is the highly conspicuous Baroque chateau, which it located atop a high cliff. The castle stands on a place of historic Slavonic settlement, where since the end of the 13th century the original stone castle was erected. The present castle is the result of a reconstruction in 18th century. It is the seat of the Regional Museum in Mikulov, housing art and historical collections, including artifacts relating to the history of local wine production.

On the main square you can admire some ornately decorated houses and the imposing Dietrichstein Mausoleum. You can take a trip up nearby Svatý kopeček (Holy Hill) – at the top you can see St. Sebastian Chapel and a stunning panorama of Mikulov and South Moravia.

In Mikulov you can see several historic churches, including the Romanesque Church of St. Václav, the Baroque Church of St. John the Baptist, the neo-Gothic Eastern Christian Church of St. Nicolas. Other noteworthy historic sights are the Dietrichstein sepulchre, the old Jewish Quarter, Altschul Synagogue, and the Piarist College.

A stroll through the charming streets is a relaxing experience. And after a walk, you can enjoy a glass of superb local wine in one of the many wine-bars or small, cosy bars.
