Ljubljana Castle

A mighty Ljubljana Castle is located on Castle Hill above the downtown of city. It is a key element of the Ljubljana skyline and is a symbol of the Slovenian capital.
Probably a first Medieval fortress was built from wood and stone in the 11th century and rebuilt repeatedly in the 12th, 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Present appearance it acquired in 17th centuries. The castle was the seat of the lords of Carniola and then it was used as a penitentiary, and as a residential complex. In the latest times it is a tourist attraction and cultural venue.

Ljubljana Castle offers the most beautiful views of Ljubljana and its surrounding areas. The castle is also a main cultural venue. It offers many cultural, historic and entertaining events throughout the year.

In the 2006 a funicular railway to the top of Castle Hill was built. The modern funicular is popular with both domestic and foreign visitors. It is particularly attractive during fine weather, when it offers spectacular views of the city.
