Transfagarasan highway, Romania

The Transfăgărășan highway (DN7C) is an very picturesque road in Romania. It passes over the Făgărăș mountains in Transylvania, Romania. It was built in the 1970s as a strategic military route, and connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia. It starts near the village of Bascov, near Pitești, and stretches 90 kilometres to the crossroad between the DN1 and Sibiu. Near the highest point (at 2000 metres a.s.l.), at Bâlea Lake, the road passes through Bâlea Tunnel (884 m long), between the highest peaks in the country, Moldoveanu and Negoiu.

This amazing road is a very winding, dotted with steep hairpin turns, long S-curves, and sharp descents. The Transfăgărășan has more tunnels (a total of 5) and viaducts than any other road in Romania. The road is usually closed from late October until late June because of snow.

Along the southern section of the road, near the village of Arefu, is Poenari Castle. The castle was the residence of Vlad the Impaler, the 15th century Prince of Wallachia who inspired Bram Stoker's Count Dracula.
The road also provides access to beautiful Bâlea Lake, Lacul Albesti (see: Lacul Albesti in Fagaras Mountains),  and Bâlea Waterfall.
