Eilean Donan - most picturesque castle in Scotland

Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Donnain) is a small island, which lies about 1 kilometre from the village of Dornie in the western Highlands of Scotland. The name Eilean Donan, or the island of Donan, is most probably called after the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD. The island is dominated by the picturesque castle. Some people say Eilean Donan is the most beautiful castle in Scotland. It was founded in the thirteenth century and became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and the Clan Macrae.

In 1719 the castle was destructed by British ships, during the Jacobite rebellions. In the 19th century, Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap reconstructed the castle. The castle was rebuilt according to the surviving ground plan of earlier phases. The details of the present castle differ from its original appearance. The restoration included the construction of an arched bridge to give easier access to the island. A picturesque castle frequently appears in photographs, film and television. You can explore nearly every part of the castle. The castle has its own visitor centre which includes a coffee shop and gift shop.
